Our Current Projects

Every Zontian is offered the opportunity to join a committee of their choice and actively contribute to projects throughout the year.

Whether you're interested in advocacy, fundraising, service projects, fellowship or membership, your contributions are truly valued as we work together to achieve our mission.

Homelessness in Older Women

25 per cent of older women in Australia live below the poverty line, many struggling to find safe, secure, and affordable housing, which can leave them in inadequate living conditions or sleeping rough.

Established as a private foundation by a small group of members of the Zonta Club of Brisbane, Sharing With Friends aims to transform the lives of older women through co-housing.

Through a shared equity model, the foundation provides older women with dignified co-housing options that allow them to live independently while still having access to support services.

Our Club advocates and fundraises throughout the year to support Sharing With Friends.

Safe City Night Walks

Recent Australian data shows that only 27 per cent of women feel safe walking our streets.

Our club has hosted Safe Cities Night Walks in South Bank and Zillmere to gather data and identify places that require better lighting and safety measures. We collaborate with Queensland Walks, universities, local councils and key agencies such as Transport and Main Roads to improve places that we identify as unsafe to walk in at night.

Our club’s initiative is being presented at the international Zonta Convention 2024 to roll out globally to support safer cities.

Windana Support Centre

Windana is one of the first domestic violence refuges in Queensland. Offering criss accommodation, support, food, shelter and medical assistance, families can stay up to 3 months with potential extensions in transitional homes.

The Zonta Club of Brisbane has a long history with Windana. Over the years and alongside fundraising efforts throughout the year, the Club has:

  • Created comfort bags for children in the centre

  • Run donation drives for whitewoods, furniture and household items

  • Raised funds and did hands-on landscaping work and refurbishment of a children’s playground

  • Raised funds for a people mover van

  • Given presents donated by club members for women and children seeking refuge at Windana.

Domestic Violence Safety Cards

In 2001, the Zonta Club of Brisbane embarked on a long-term project to help reduce the incidence of family violence in the greater Brisbane area.

The project included creating small cards with important contact numbers for women leaving domestic violence situations. These cards were given out by appropriate organisations to provide women and children with a discreet tool for information and safety. We partner with Northside Alliance Against Domestic Violence (NAADV) to produce the cards.

Since, the project has expanded to other Zonta Clubs in Queensland, and the cards are used by QLD Police Service and other agencies in the Greater Brisbane Region.

16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence is a global campaign led annually by UN Women. It runs every year from 25 November to 10 December.

With General Consultative Status to UN Women, Zonta Clubs internationally get involved in 16 Days of Activism. Each year, our club runs campaigns and hosts an awareness march through Brisbane city.

This is only a fraction of what our Club achieves together.
